Harton, Marsden and Tyne Dock are suburbs of South Shields in The Metropolitan Borough of South Tyneside, Between them there are 12 pubs, with four selling real ale. 1. The Bamburgh

Suburban pub who’s garden looks out towards the coast. There are usually up to 4 handpulls, mainly Greene King Beers. Tel :- 0191 4541899. Buses to South Shields Town Centre stop outside the front and garden side of the pub.

2. The County
34 Sunderland Road, South Shields, NE33 4UU County, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Large corner pub which features on the South Tyneside Local List. It is also in Westoe Village Conservation Area. There is no real ale available. Tel :- 0191 4561583 Several buses stop nearby to South Shields Town Centre and Sunderland.

3. Cyprus

Formerly the Cyprus Hotel, then the New Cyprus, this pub stands out due to its external tiling. There is a fuller description in the South Tyneside Local List Tel :- 07722 767165. The pub has been refurbished ( March 26) and now sells real ale. Buses to the town centre stop nearby.

4. The Fountain
116 Highfield Road, South Shields, NE34 6JL Fountain, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Popular pub close to the coast and not far from the Twin Centre. Real ale discontinued on Autumn 2025.. The pub appears on the South Tyneside Local List Tel:- 0191 4554901. Regular buses to the Town Centre stop near the pub.

5. Harley’s Bar
262 Sunderland Road, South Shields, NE34 6QY Harley’s Bar, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Small single room bar in Harton Nook , south of the Town Centre. No Real Ale reported March 2025.. Tel:- 0191 4207748 Regular buses to South Shields and Sunderland stop nearby.

6. Kennedy’s
418 South Eldon Street, South Shields, NE33 5SY Kennedy’s, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Dating from 1809 and formerly called The Plough and The Tyne Dock Hotel. This is an L shaped pub on a busy roundabout in Tyne Dock. Tel:- 0191 4564363. Close to Tyne Dock Metro Station and buses to South Shields Town Centre and Jarrow. No real ale.

7. Last Orders
1 Stanley Street, South Shields, NE34 0BX Last Orders, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Built in 1904 as The Colliery Hotel, changing it’s name not too long ago. Tel :- 0191 4545165. Tyne Dock is about 10 minutes walk and there are plenty of buses to the Town Centre. No real ale.

8. Marsden Grotto.
Coast Road, South Shields, NE34 7BS Marsden Grotto, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Located on the beach at the foot of a cliff, the most unusual pub in the area, if not the country. It even has it’s own entry on Wikipedia. Tel:- 0191 4556060. There’s a bus stop outside the Grotto entrance, with a service to South Shields and Sunderland. Check pub website for opening times and dependent on the tides.. No real ale.

9. Marsden Inn
Redwell Lane, South Shields, NE34 7JS Marsden Inn, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Pub and hotel about 5 minutes walk from the coast, and Marsden Grotto. The pub closed at the end of May 2024. Tel :- 0191 4561812. Buses to South Shields and Sunderland stop nearby.

10.The Old Ship
Sunderland Road, South Shields, NE34 6NQ Old Ship, South Shields – CAMRA Experience
Dating from about 1803 and reputed to be the oldest public house in South Shields. The pub features in the South Tyneside Local List Real ale features from two handpulls. Tel:- 0191 4562196. Regular buses to the town centre stop close by.

11. Vigilant

Prominent red brick building with also features in the South Tyneside Local List. No real ale from December 24 Tel:- 0191 4272931 Regular buses to the town centre stop close by.

12. The Westoe
As well as being in The Westoe Village Conservation Area, the pub also features in the South Tyneside Local List. The pub is being refurbished from August 2024. There is no real ale. Tel :- 0191 4553450
