Sunderland West Real Ale Guide


The map above shows the Chester Road, Deptford and Millfield areas to the west of Sunderland City Centre. There are nine pubs and a brewery featured. Two don’t sell real ale and one is closed ; included for historical interest. Each pub below shows a link to the CAMRA Experience website, with gives more details such as opening times. Please note that information contained may change. Telephone numbers have been provided if you wish to check details.
Heritage Pubs:- Two pubs feature in the CAMRA Pub Heritage Guide and there are five Grade II listed buildings. .

1. Brewlab
1 West Quay Court, Sunderland Enterprise Park, Sunderland, SR5 2TE Brewlab, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
Formerly Darwin Brewery/ Brewlab until Darwin moved to North Shields. Open days are held, usually on a Friday, with a bar with up to four handpulls available. 2. Chesters
Chester Road, Sunderland, SR4 7DR Chesters, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
Large suburban pub about one mile from Sunderland City Centre. It has a large pay car park at the front of the building, but you can claim the fee back. Up to six real ales are available and the pub offers a loyalty card, and being a Stonegate pub, takes the 50p CAMRA vouchers. Tel:- 0191 5659952. There are many bus services to the City Centre and beyond stop outside the pub.

3. Kings Arms
Beach Street, Deptford, Sunderland, SR4 6BU Kings Arms, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
The Kings Arms can be found halfway down the bank in Deptford, about 15 – 20 minutes walk from the City Centre. It is a Grade II listed building and features on the Historic England Website This pub is an entry on the CAMRA heritage pub website – One star – A pub interior of special national historic interest (click on the CAMRA Experience link above for more). Up to four handpulls are available, depending on demand. Note limited daytime opening hours on weekdays. Tel :- 0191 5679804. Bus stops into the city centre are about 10 minutes walk up the bank on the A1231.

4. Mountain Daisy
150 Hylton Road, Millfield, Sunderland, SR4 7XT Mountain Daisy, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
The Mountain Daisy is about a 20 minute walk from the City Centre in Millfield and is a Grade II listed building and features on the Historic England Website This pub is an entry on the CAMRA heritage pub website – Three star – A pub interior of outstanding national historic importance. (click on the CAMRA Experience link above for more). As of December 2025 the pub has one handpull for real ale. .. Tel :- 0191 5242278. Bus stops into the city centre are nearby as well as Millfield Metro Station.

5. Museum Vaults
33 Silksworth Row, City Centre, Sunderland, SR1 3Q Museum Vaults, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
Small former Vaux pub with two small rooms, both with real fires. Two real ales are usually available from this family run pub. Check the link above for opening times, which can change when Sunderland AFC are playing at home. Tel :- 0191 5659443 Bus stops close by to City Centre, or a 10- 15 walk.

6. Saltgrass
Ayres Quay, Hanover Place, Sunderland, SR4 6BY Saltgrass, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
The Saltgrass can be found at the bottom of the bank in Deptford, about 20 minutes walk from the City Centre. No real ale as it wasn’t selling. . Note limited daytime opening hours on weekdays. Tel :- 0191 543 6309. Bus stops into the city centre are about 15 minutes walk up the bank on the A1231.

7. Ship Isis
26 Silksworth Row, City Centre, Sunderland, SR1 3QJ Ship Isis, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
Part of the same pub group as the KIngs Arms and The Saltgrass, this former Jarrow Brewery pub is a Grade II listed building Historic England website It is listed under a former name, The Livingstone. In addition, after a refurb when Jarrow Brewery took over, it was awarded a Outstanding Conservation and Renovation Award (OCR). by CAMRA. The pub serves up to five real ales and two ciders. 8. The Shipwrights
Ferryboat Lane, North Hylton, Sunderland, SR5 3HW Shipwrights, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
The Shipwrights is a Grade II listed and features on the Historic England website dating back to the 1850’s. The Frank Styles mural on side of the pub ( pictured above) recognizes the shipbuilding past of the area. The pub is very close to the River Wear and Ferryboat Lane is a no through road off the A1231. There is no real ale. Tel :- 0191 5495139. Note the nearest bus stops, to Sunderland are half a mile away at the other side of the A1231

9. Tram Car Inn
51 The Green, Southwick, Sunderland North, Sunderland, SR5 2HT Tram Car Inn, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
A Grade II pub on the HIstoric England website overlooking Southwick Green. Note that the pub is currently closed.

10. The Wavendon
30A Wavendon Crescent, High Barnes, Sunderland, SR4 8LW Wavendon, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience
Formerly known as The Broadway, this Greene King pub is set back from the main Chester Road. Real ale no longer available. Also known as The Wavey. Tel 0191 5251862. Many bus routes stop nearby and its a 15 minute ride into the City Centre.
