Washington Real Ale Guide


Washington recently celebrated 60 years since it’s designation as a New Town. The three Washington Village pubs, which are all within the Washington Village Conservation Area – (3 on the map above) predate the New Town as do the Biddick and The Havelock. Nine real ale pubs are shown, Each pub below shows a link to the CAMRA Experience website, which give more details such as opening times. Please note that information contained may change. 1. Biddick Inn
Bonemill Lane, Washington, NE38 8AJ Biddick Inn, Washington – CAMRA ExperienceOne of the oldest pubs in the area and located next to the River Wear at Fatfield Bridge. Up to two real ales available in the left hand bar . Tel:- 0191 4162500. Bus stop outside the door and 30 yards away. Services to Sunderland and Washington.

2. Courtyard Bar
Biddick Lane, Washington, NE38 8AB Courtyard, Washington – CAMRA Experience
A regular in The Good Beer Guide for over 20 years, The Courtyard Bar offers up to 8 cask ales. During 2024 the actual courtyard was re-laid giving it a smart appearance. Beer festivals held every Easter and August Bank Holiday. Tel :- 0191 4170445. Buses to Sunderland, Houghton and Washington stop outside the premises.

3. Cross Keys

Nearly 200 years old, this smart popular pub looking out onto Washington Village Green. Up to three cask ales are available. Within Washington Village Conservation Area – Tel :- 0191 4154679. Washington town service bus stops opposite.

4. The Havelock Arms
Bonemill Lane, Washington, NE38 8AJ Havelock, Washington – CAMRA Experience
The Havelock had a makeover in 2024 including external paintwork. There are up to two handpulls, one is usually a Timothy Taylors ale. The pub over looks the River Wear. Tel :- 0191 4150739. Buses to Washington and Sunderland stop outside the pub.

5. Sir William de Wessington
2-3 Victoria Road, Washington, NE37 2SY Sir William De Wessyngton, Washington – CAMRA Experience
Popular Wetherspoons in Concord, Washington. A long time entrant in the Good Beer Guide with up to four guest ales along side the regular beers. Tel :- 0191 4180100 . Concord Bus Station is opposite with buses for Newcastle, Sunderland, South Shields, Houghton and Durham.

6. The Steps

Single roomed pub about two minutes walk from the Village Green. There are usually 4 real ales available. It is within the Washington Village Conservation Area Tel :- 0191 4150733. Town Centre bus stops next to the Green.

7. Teal Farm
Edale Close, Washington, NE38 8FH Teal Farm, Washington – CAMRA Experience
Marston’s pub serving Teal Farm Estate. Real ale offering sometimes intermittent ; beers will be from Marstons. Tel :- 0191 5800637. Bus Stops close by to Sunderland and Washington Town Centre.

8. Washington Arms
Dating from 1828, this smart popular pub is tucked into the corner of the Village Green. Up to three cask ales are available. Vary large garden at the rear. Within Washington Village Conservation Area – Tel :- 0191 4187843. Washington Town Service bus stops opposite.

9. Wearside Farm.
3 Turbine Way, Turbine Business Park, Washington, SR5 3NZ Wearside Farm, Washington – CAMRA Experience
Located in a business park off the A1231 Sunderland Highway and close to the Nissan car factory.
